OPC stands for "OLE for Process Control"and is an open interface standard. Basedon the OLE/COM and DCOMtechnology it enables simple, standardiseddata interchange between automation/controlapplications, field devices, and business/officeapplications.

Putting it into a nutshell: OPC simplifiesthe interfacing between automation components from different vendors and PC applications such as visualisation or office systems. 

OPC allows the exchange of data over a common interface between hardware devices and software applications developed by a variety of vendors. The windows technology and OPC make it possible to combine programmable controller hardware and software without the necessity of numerous special drivers
